During the Renaissance Period, the emphasis on women's gowns shifted from length to width. Women's gowns become wider at the shoulders and hips to emphasize the long bodices and narrow waists. The hoop skirt appeared on the scene, along with the Bum Roll. The Bum Roll gives a more rounded appearance to the hips and helps create the illusion of a narrower waist.
